Healthcare waste management is one of the main problems for the environmental health system of Jordanian hospitals. The usage of alternative treatment technology for infectious healthcare waste was so far not carried out and is a new subject in Jordan. The objective of the project was to demonstrate the efficient and environmentally friendly operation of an entire HCW system in the Al Basheer Hospital as sample for other hospitals in Jordan and in the neighboring countries. The task of the project was to demonstrate how an alternative treatment plant can solve existing environmental problems and how an efficient disposal chain logistic can help to minimize occupational risks. It was demonstrated how a national training system for HCW can be set up and how steam sterilization plants can be validated and monitored.
In cooperation with the WHO – CEHA (Regional Centre for Environmental Health Activities) it was planned that this demonstration project shall be a reference project for the working area of the CEHA (21 countries).
