Project description:

The hospital waste sector in Laos is extremely under-developed (as of end 2008). The level of staff training and the majority of equipment do not satisfy international standards. Hospital waste is not collected and transported according to the recommendations from the World Health Organization. Moreover, there is a lack of secure and environmentally friendly treatment methods for the various types of waste. The current treatment situation pollutes the environment and poses a danger for both hospital personnel and the population.

The World Health Organization in Laos has set itself the target of improving the disposal of hospital waste and has issued a tender for the development of a national waste disposal plan for hospitals. The scheme has the following contents:

1. The evaluation of existing documents
2. Drawing up a sustainable national strategy for hospital waste-management
3. The organization of workshop for national decision-makers to define and explain a plan for hospital waste-management.
4. Development of a national health care waste management (HCWM) action plan, budget and policy for the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The experts from ETLog Health EnviroTech & Logistics GmbH were given the task of drawing up the waste-management plan, health care waste management (HCWM) action plan, budget and the policy for the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

• Evaluation of a draft plan for a national hospital waste-management plan submitted by the ministry of health;
• The identification of deficits;
• Presenting and defining suggestions for improvement;
• The development of a national waste disposal strategy taking into account country-specific features and legislation;
• Providing support for a two-day workshop involving national decision-makers for the discussion and explanation of the waste-management plan developed;
• The production of a final report with suggestions for the practical implementation and the next steps to be taken
• To provide support for the planning, organization and implementation of a Consultative Workshop Coordination and Alignment of Healthcare Waste Management Programmes and Functions in Lao PDR
